Port Stories — Port Melbourne
Seating alcoves on beach St, between Station Pier & Port Melbourne Yacht Club
Artists: Helen Bodycomb & Dianna Wells Design
Creative Direction: Julie Shiels
One mosaic and four sand-blasted granite inets, each featuring a fragment of text capturing the vernacular stories of Port. The alphabets for this work were especially developed from photographs of old signs around Port.
The mosaic “You can take the boy out of the Port” is an important old ‘acorn’ for the community members that have stayed, but also for those who have been forced to move.
The stories in granite refer to the soldiers leaving for World World War 2. The work is from the rarely heard point of view of the women and children. They were left behind and in some cases never saw their loved ones again.
